NUI Galway and Druid Theatre announce formal partnership

10 year strategic relationship with an emphasis on strengthening academic ties, student participation, local and worldwide events, and supporting creative industries in the western United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom NUI Galway and Druid Theatrical Group have committed to a 10-year strategic collaboration that will expand on the existing relationship between the University and the famous theatre company that has existed since the 1960s.

Druid’s only academic partner will be NUI Galway, with the firm giving internship opportunities and striving to develop and enhance the effectiveness of NUI Galway’s Creative Arts programs.

In 2025, the University will present an exhibition to commemorate Druid’s 50th birthday as well as the 180th anniversary of NUI Galway.

When you ask a student from Boston, Berlin, or Beijing why they would want to study in Galway, one of the main reasons they provide is the unique chance they have to learn from our world-class creative organizations, such include Druid.” It is also dedicated to increasing its presence on the NUI Galway campus with customised on-site performances and dialogues, the first of which was Druid Gregory, which took place outside in the University’s Quadrangle in September 2020.

“For the last ten years, the Druid Academy at NUI Galway has been a fantastic source of pleasure and inspiration for us as a company, working with students as they start on their careers in theatre,” said Garry Hynes, the company’s founder and artistic director.

This will strengthen the bond between Druid, its students, and the larger academic community in Galway.” A collaborative effort between Druid and NUI Galway will create methods to further improve Galway’s worldwide profile while also engaging with and integrating a varied range of new and existing groups and cultures in the region.

Because of the mutual enhancement of the Druid Academy, the Druid Artist-in-Residence program, and the Druid Archive, which is housed at NUI Galway, Druid will also assist in raising awareness of the University’s undergraduate and postgraduate courses among the arts community at large, both at home and abroad.

While establishing their own creative arts businesses in the west of Ireland, as well as regionally and globally – exactly like Druid do – our students will draw inspiration from their example.” We’ve already accomplished so much as a result of our collaboration, and the next decade of collaboration promises to be really exciting.” See Garry Hynes and Marie Mullen discussing the Druid Theatre’s roots here.
